High-Quality Photos of the Solar Lanterns

These are closeups of some of the different lantern designs that were distributed in Ghana this January. Below each photo is the lantern ID, and the name of the designer.

The shadows cast inside the diffuser are from the heads of the screws that fasten the LED in place; among other issues, this is being addressed in the next design phase.

This plastic box was originally a container for dry-seaweed, bought from the local Japanese supermarket. This was the first of the "final" lanterns that we built for the January trip to Ghana. The box happened to be just the right size to fit the battery; the square shape made it easy to mount the sheet metal control panel. This gooseneck was salvaged from an old desklamp, but in Red#1 (sorry, no photo yet), the gooseneck was homemade using flexible tubing and romex.

The black rubber tube coming out the side is a flexible handle (not wings).

Wonderful initiative. There should be more of such efforts taken throughout the world.
In India, only a handful of companies such as NIMH Technolniks, D.light, Sunlite, etc are working towards manufacturing solar lamp and at the same time providing them to people living in rural areas at affordable prices as against 5000000 approximate people who live in darkness since electricity comes as a luxury for them. Is there any chance you could distribute such lamps in India too.

Prolightsystems Solar power is gradually finding its reliability in the existing times where the non-renewable sources of energy such as oil, non-renewable petrol, etc are decaying at a constant rate.

Should I procure the K lightweight star Lantern? that perhaps the problem you're asking yourself right away as you ask for the data superhighway as I did. I needed a lightweight that was solarized however not significant & huge. I needed one thing for my child sister to relish & thus I might teach her concerning electrical device technology.

This is really awesome. Solar energy is one best mode to help the people who cannot afford other means for energy and at the same time it does not cost much.
